'Leaders have high expectations for pupil behaviour and achievement. Both are realised.' OfSTED 2024; 'Reading is a strength in the school.' OfSTED 2024; 'The school has created a curriculum that is carefully considered and mapped out.' OfSTED 2024

Welcome to BG

Welcome to our website.  BG is a primary school on the edge of Barnsley in South Yorkshire.  We have around 300 children on roll from Reception to Y6.  We are a school that is focused on providing the best quality teaching and learning within an engaging, well sequenced curriculum for our children.  Pupils behave well and are committed to caring for each other. Lessons are exciting, interesting and appropriately challenging. We ensure that all children, regardless of need and staring point, can and do succeed at our school.

OfSTED recognised in 2024 that 'personalised adjustments are identified that relate to specific subjects (and) pupils with special needs or disabilities achieve well'.

Attendance at our school is well above the local and national average which tells us that our children want to be here!  Our learners consistently tell us that they feel safe and that our staff keep them safe.  Children at BG understand and value difference and diversity and are welcoming, polite and respectful.

Academic outcomes are strong at BG.  Children in Y1 consistently achieve well ahead of the national average for phonics and this is mirrored as they move into Y2 across all curriculum areas (2023 results). By the end of Key Stage 2 in Y6, children at BG achieve outcomes in the combined reading, writing and maths measure that are ahead of the national picture and progress scores in English are ahead of the national average.  We prioritise reading at BG and in our 2024 inspection, it was noted that 'reading is a strength in the school'.

Alongside academic success, we ensure that our children benefit from high quality experiences, good personal development and that they are happy at school.  In 2024, OfSTED recognised that 'pupils get to develop their talents and interests' and 'the curriculum is supported through purposeful visits'.  We offer a full and varied programme of clubs and co-curricular opportunities for all children.  This includes a range of competitive and participatory sport, Latin, crochet, discussion and debating and creative and performing arts.

More than 4 in 5 parents would recommend our school to another parent and 97% agree that their child is happy in school (Parent Survey 2023).

BG is a happy, motivated, welcoming and successful primary school, where children thrive and are well cared for.

We can't wait to welcome you - please get in touch to arrange a visit if you are considering joining us!
