BG Social Media Pledge

We believe that the risks of social media platforms considerably outweigh their benefits for primary aged children.  We are determined to make social media invisible in our school.  Use of social media by primary aged children puts them at up to three times greater risk of depression.  It exposes them to the potentially devastating harm posed by online predators, waiting to exploit our young people.  It exposes them to content that promotes misogyny, violence against women, crime, extremist views and substance abuse.  There is simply no good reason for children to use social media in primary school.

We're clear - we won't provide advice on how to use social media safely, because we believe that children should not use it at all.  Our computing and PSHE programmes of study are rich in information about online safety, but this can only go so far.  We wouldn't dream of leaving our children unattended in a room of hundreds of unknown adults, so why would we expose them to the risks of online social media platforms?

We've developed a Pledge to support our crusade - our BG Social Media Pledge and we think it's fairly unique in primary schools.

We want all of our children in KS2, and their Parents to sign our Social Media Pledge.  We'll provide you as Parents with monthly updates and information to help you navigate what is a terrifying topic and we will continue to repeatedly enforce our message of online safety and 'delete social media'

Ask your children about what we're doing in school - they'll tell you that social media is dangerous for primary children - please support this message.  If your child has any of these apps on their devices, delete them today and say no when they ask if they can download them in future.  It's just not worth the risk.

We can't change the world, but we can change our small piece of it.

Have a look at the resources below for more information and, when we ask you to sign the Pledge with your child, agree!
